Montrose and Belmont feature – been a lot of activity there in past 6 weeks in terms of break ins.

Area around gardens is per usual – theft out of and common robbery (muggings).

Information
Theft of motor bikes/scooters within DPV still a problem. White Bantum bakkie resulted in two suspects being profiled and turns out father of one of them arrested while back for theft of motor cycle.

Beware car park people/controllers – police suspect they are behind a lot of activity. Capt Nepaul arrested 18 of then in last week. Need to get of them wherever and whenever possible.

Areas of concern mentioned by police – De Park Drive/Davenport Rd/Montrose/Belvedere as it Buitengracht (from Relish Restaurant and towards Foreshore).

Highflyer keeps changing appearance as you can see and specializes in business break ins.

A resident in DPV area had a horrid experience:

She works for a reputable estate agency on Kloof Street. On Friday a man
(well dressed, well spoken, educated, white, mid thirty, short dark hair,
thin build) came into her office. He said he had just sold his house in
Surrey UK, returned to SA and wanted to look at houses in City Bowl. He said
he didn’t have a car or phone yet as he had just stepped of the plane and
was waiting for his fiancé. He was knowledgeable about England and had
clearly been there. He made an appointment for Monday. They did some
research about the property in the area that he said he had sold and the
sale values the he spoke about were correct.

She and a female colleague then took him in the colleagues car to see 4
houses yesterday - 1 in Tbk, 2 in OH and 1 in DPV. He was polite and shook
hands with the owners and exchanged pleasantries etc. Then while in
Vredehoek at around midday, he leant forward to the passenger seat, grabbed
the lady around the neck and placed a knife to her through - telling the
driver to drive onto the N2 straight away. He then forced them to drive past
Blue Downs and into the township at Sandrift. During this time they had to
hand over cash, cards, jewelry and phones. He then told them where to drive
in the township and then, after telling them to stop, jumped out the car and
disappeared between the shacks.

Throughout the ordeal he was very instructive - eg. telling them to not move
when near police cars, telling them to stay in the right hand lanes so as
not to get close to parked police on the roadsides (they past 3 stationery
SAPS vehicles and one caravan) and reminding them that he didn’t want to do
anything to them, etc etc. He also left saying “I hope you can find the
police from here” when he jumped out in Sandrift township. He also scared
them from trying to attract attention in the place where he got out by
saying that ³careful the people here will hijack and rape you²

The only unusual feature he had was red eyes - likely drug related.

SAPS have opened a case and assigned an investigating officer. They have
taken fingerprints and are apparently doing an identikit today. Quite an
alarming incident. IF we get the identikit I will send it on to you. He just
happened to pull the knife out when in out area but this could have happened
at any point ­ frightening!

2 “Bravo” Males attacked a tourist. No arrests as yet.

A resident reports his experience on 13 May in Molteno Rd:

2 really sinister looking “bravo” males, both around the 30’s, wearing not
very tidy clothing. One of them had a sweatshirt with a hood over his
head, the other one was carrying a plastic bag. They looked and acted so
suspicious, that I was not the only one who noticed them.

As I was watching them standing in front of our house, looking over the
wall, a friend passed by car and called me on my cell, to say that there
was someone looking over our wall and seemed to be about to jump over.
It was comforting to know, that also others are on the lookout and
aware.

I called the SAPS control room and reported the incident. The SAPS were there within 3-4 minutes and caught up with them in Belmont Ave, were they were searched and then taken with. If they were up to trouble, at least this will be two who will think twice about being active in this neighbourhood.

Please refer to the report on the mugging 9 May, Welgemeend St and help our neighbour to recover her stolen goods (might have been thrown in the bushes….)

She reports:
My handbag was a beige canvas bag about 300x300x50mm. It had bright red
tubing on the edges and a bright glossy strap in front. Inside I had a
brown leather credit card holder, a yellow money purse, car keys for a
fiat, Oliver Peoples sunglasses, a Nokia 6500 slider cellphone and an
umbrella with hounds tooth patterns.

There is a new number plate hijacking trend brewing around.
These Hi-jackers will stalk you to a parking lot or mall, after parking your vehicle; they remove your number plate and wait for you to drive off.
They then follow you and overtake you displaying your number plate at their window as if you had lost it and want to give it back to you.
Shocked that your number has fallen off your car, you bring your vehicle to a halt to get it from them.
This is all they want you to do and by the time you realized what happened it is too late, your car was hi-jacked or you could have been raped/killed.
Please don’t just stop for anything; a number plate is valueless compared to your life.
Think what is happening before you react to it.
Criminals are clever and cunning but are ruthless in getting what they want…
